During October of 2008, I was privelaged to have the opportunity to design and typeset this book for my good friends in the Hassenbusch family. Physician, Heal Thyself was written by Dr. Samuel J. Hassenbusch III and is intended to be a guide book for the newly-diagnosed cancer patient — as written from the perspective of someone who is both patient and physician. Though Dr. Hassenbush passed on before the book ever made it to print, I like to think he’d be very proud of the hard work his son Jason put into publishing it and that he might be pleased with overall look of the finished work.

I designed the cover jacket, layout, typography and visual themes throughout the book. The photography for the front and back of the cover jacket was done by Alexander Kliafas of Houston, Texas, and the wood in the photograps was hand-stained by Jason Hassenbusch.

Cover Jacket (layout):

The chapter starts for Chapters 2-13 feature Dr. Hassenbusch’s actual MRI scans, placed in order chronologically from chapter to chapter.

Chapter Start (Chapter 2):

In late December, the finished books arrived. The printer (Bang Printing of Brainerd, MN) did a fantastic job and the final piece looked even better than I had imagined it. As soon as I have it photographed I will update this post with pictures.

This is a complete campaign pitch I did on behalf of Harger Howe & Associates for the Houston Police Department. HPD needs to recruit hundreds of new officers over the next two years. This integrated marketing campain strives to help them do just that.

The campaign proposal includes various media outlets including broadcast, web, email, publications and variable-data direct marketing. The crux of the campaign is the micro-site, where interested recipients can begin the stringent application process and through which applicants can communicate with their recruiter.

When I pitched this campaign to the HPD with Harger Howe, the recruiting team was very receptive and felt that this approach would be effective in improving their response rate.

Because these coins have not been minted yet, I unfortunately don’t have photographs to show. However, this vector art should give a good idea as to how these coins might look after production.

By the way, wondering who Asclepius is? Have a look at this Wikipedia article and see why he’s on the coin.

Recently, I took part in a 48 Hour Film Project with Sweet Baby Jesus Productions. We made a short film titled Rushin’. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about how video productions are made. I also made a lot of new friends.

For those of you unfamiliar with how the 48 Hour Film Project works, it’s a competition where teams are given 48 hours to write, film, edit and turn in a 4- to 7-minute movie. Each team is given a random genre and a common prop, character and line of dialogue. We pulled the following:

Genre: Spy
Prop: Light Bulb
Character: Frank of Freida Gilroy (a waiter/waitress)
Line: “He’s been around a time or two.”

This is what we made:

I hope you like it. We’re very proud of it (though the Director’s Cut will be much better!). We were in the “B” showing at the River Oaks Theatre. It was really weird for me to see myself up on the big screen and we were all nervous about how our film would be received but the audience laughed at all the appropriate places and we all went home very relieved (and very drunk).

There were four showings total this year due to the large number of entries. Our film was played last in our showing – a harbinger of good fortune.

Last night was the Wrap Party at Shirlock’s Pub. They again showed a selection of the judges favorites from each of the 4 showings. Then it was awards time. We won the following:

Audience Favorite

Best Choreography

Best Use of Character

Best Acting (Ensemble)

Best Writing

Best Directing

Best Film (!)

We are all, in a word, stoked.

I can’t wait until next year when we can do this all over again. This competition is so much fun and we’ve got an incredible director and a fantastic team. Have a look at our film blog and drop by YouTube to give us a comment!

-Kent

****UPDATE 2/2/2009****

The film has been taken down from YouTube so we can submit it to various film festivals. Sorry it is no longer viewable here, but I am pleased to tell everyone that it will be playing in Miami in March. Also, Rushin’ has been listed on IMDB, which everyone at Sweet Baby Jesus is very excited about!

Over the weekend I was privelaged to get to design the CD cover for one of my favorite Houston bands – the Dollyrockers. Here’s what I came up with:

Front cover (adapted from original artwork by Sean Flournoy)

Inside the 4-panel insert

Back of 4-panel insert (photography by Tod G.)

Back cover (tray card)

Some imagery throughout adapted from GoMedia’s Arsenal. The front cover concept and car image was created by Sean Flournoy. The back of the 4-panel insert features a photo of the band taken by Tod G.

This is a really good debut album from a fantastic rockabilly punk band with a penchant for the occaisonal country tune. Check them out on their MySpace page if you’d like to hear them.

UPDATE:

The CD’s are finally in from the manufacturer! Here’s one photographed. It looks amazing!

I’m very pleased with how these came out. The inserts were printed on 100# uncoated paper and have exactly the flat look I was going for. As I didn’t get to design the label on the CD itself, it was a very pleasant surprise to see that the manufacturer had taken the time to use the same typefaces and some of the same design elements (namely the stars) as in the rest of the art.

The finished business cards for Mike Kruft’s personal training business Fit Heights finally came in today. They look fantastic! Here’s what they look like:

Front

Back

These cards are 3.5″ x 1.75″ in size and were printed on 120# uncoated stock in two colors (Process C and K) with a spot UV coating over the floral graphic on the front and the Fit Heights logo on the back to give them that extra shimmer. Economical to produce and a tasteful departure from the usual heavy-handed musclehead approach of most collateral in the fitness industry.
