Rushin’ Wins 7 Awards

Recently, I took part in a 48 Hour Film Project with Sweet Baby Jesus Productions. We made a short film titled Rushin’. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about how video productions are made. I also made a lot of new friends.

For those of you unfamiliar with how the 48 Hour Film Project works, it’s a competition where teams are given 48 hours to write, film, edit and turn in a 4- to 7-minute movie. Each team is given a random genre and a common prop, character and line of dialogue. We pulled the following:

Genre: Spy
Prop: Light Bulb
Character: Frank of Freida Gilroy (a waiter/waitress)
Line: “He’s been around a time or two.”

This is what we made:

I hope you like it. We’re very proud of it (though the Director’s Cut will be much better!). We were in the “B” showing at the River Oaks Theatre. It was really weird for me to see myself up on the big screen and we were all nervous about how our film would be received but the audience laughed at all the appropriate places and we all went home very relieved (and very drunk).

There were four showings total this year due to the large number of entries. Our film was played last in our showing – a harbinger of good fortune.

Last night was the Wrap Party at Shirlock’s Pub. They again showed a selection of the judges favorites from each of the 4 showings. Then it was awards time. We won the following:

  • Audience Favorite
  • Best Choreography
  • Best Use of Character
  • Best Acting (Ensemble)
  • Best Writing
  • Best Directing
  • Best Film (!)

We are all, in a word, stoked.

I can’t wait until next year when we can do this all over again. This competition is so much fun and we’ve got an incredible director and a fantastic team. Have a look at our film blog and drop by YouTube to give us a comment!

****UPDATE 2/2/2009****

The film has been taken down from YouTube so we can submit it to various film festivals. Sorry it is no longer viewable here, but I am pleased to tell everyone that it will be playing in Miami in March. Also, Rushin’ has been listed on IMDB, which everyone at Sweet Baby Jesus is very excited about!
